Teaching and Learning At Childwall
Teaching & Learning Vision: To enable all students to learn, through deliberately planned high participation, deep thinking and high engagement strategies
At Childwall Sports and Science Academy, our lessons are designed using Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, which are research-based strategies proven to support effective learning.
Each lesson typically includes:
• Review and Recall: We start by revisiting prior learning, through our DO NOWs. These are to strengthen memory and build connections.
• Small Steps: New content is introduced in manageable chunks to avoid overload.
• Modelled Examples: Teachers demonstrate clear examples before students practice independently.
• Guided Practice: Students work with support to apply new knowledge.
• Checking for Understanding: Teachers use questioning and feedback throughout to ensure every student is included and misconceptions are addressed. We do this at Childwall, through Cold call, Mini whiteboards and Turn & Talk.
• Independent Practice: Students consolidate learning through tasks that deepen understanding.
• Review: Lessons often end with a short recap or retrieval activity to embed knowledge.
This structure helps all learners succeed by combining clarity, practice, and regular feedback.
Student Voice
“Lessons are structured so we can focus straight away, understand what we’re learning and feel confident taking part.”
“The routines are the same in every lesson, so I know exactly what to do and can focus on learning straight away.”
“Teachers explain things clearly and give us time to practise, which helps me feel confident when I work independently.”
